An Emergency Warning Intercommunication System ( EWIS ) is a piece of equipment in buildings that assists to save lives in the event of an emergency.

Consisting of two main components, the early warning system (EWS) and the intercommunication system (EIS).

The EWS is used to evacuate the occupants of a building in the event of an emergency such as a fire or threat. This is done through tones produced via speakers installed in the field and connected to the EWS.

The EIS portion consists of Warden phones located in fire compartments used to assist emergency personnel in the even of an evacuation.

A Building Occupant Warning System ( BOWS ) is similar to that of a EWIS system, however without the EIS portion. Similarily this is used for evacuation of personnel, generally via amplifiers integrated into the Fire Indicator Panel.
